Your location stays with you.
This is a plain-language description of what the site actually does, written to match the code rather than to cover us legally.
Your location
When you allow location access, your coordinates stay in your browser. The distance sorting is calculated on your own device. The coordinates are never sent to our servers and are never stored.
If you use the manual search instead, only the place name you typed is sent to the Government of Canada's public geolocation service (geolocator.api.geo.ca) to be looked up. Your device location is not included.
What is stored on your device
Three things are kept in your browser's local storage and never leave it unless stated below: your chosen language, a randomly generated device identifier, and your private washroom trail.
The washroom trail records the stops you save. It never records the route you travelled. Clearing it from the trail settings, or clearing your browser data, removes it permanently.
Reviews and ratings
There are no accounts, so no email address, name or password is ever collected. If you post a review, we store the review text, score, reaction, language and the washroom it belongs to.
Reviews are tied to a one-way HMAC-SHA256 hash of your randomly generated device identifier — not to the identifier itself. A separate hash, computed from that identifier together with your IP address, is used only for rate limiting so one person cannot flood the system. Your IP address itself is not stored in plain text.
You can delete your own review at any time from the same card you posted it on.
Third parties
Advertising is served by Google AdSense, which sets its own cookies and is governed by Google's privacy policy. This is what keeps the site free.
Map tiles on the washroom trail page come from OpenStreetMap. Icon fonts and the map library are loaded from jsDelivr and unpkg. The manual place search calls the Government of Canada geolocation service. Each of these sees your IP address as part of a normal web request, as any website you visit does.
Your choices
You can decline location access and use the manual search instead — the site is fully usable either way. You can clear your trail, delete your reviews, and clear your browser's local storage at any time.
Because there are no accounts, we have no way to identify you and therefore no way to look up your data on request. If you want everything gone, clearing your browser data for this site achieves it.
Changes
If what the site does changes, this page changes with it, and the date below is updated.
